National Champion Brass to Present Season Finale

The 30-piece Fountain City Brass Band will bring their 2009-2010 concert season to a close with “Classic Brass,” on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. at MidAmerica Nazarene University’s Bell Cultural Arts Center, located at 2030 E. College Way, in Olathe, KS. Tickets are: $20 for adults; $15 for seniors; $10 for MNU Faculty/Staff and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased by calling (913) 971-3636, by email at bellboxoffice@mnu.edu, or online at www.fcbb.net. Unsold tickets will be available for purchase at the Bell Center box office one hour before the program begins.

The concert will open with the traditional British march “Slaidburn” by William Rimmer, followed by a transcription of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles.” The band’s first featured soloist of the night will be Chris Larios (FCBB’s principal cornetist) in the premiere of his own arrangement of Maurice Duruflé’s “Piu Jesu.” From here the band will perform the first major work of the evening “Variations on an Enigma” by Philip Sparke, which was commissioned by Howard Snell for the Desford Colliery Band and first performed by them in Gillingham, Dorset, England in September 1986. “Variations on an Enigma” is the set test piece for the 2010 North American Brass Band Championships, which take place April 17 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Fountain City Brass Band will be attempting to become the first band in the history of the competition to win four consecutive titles.

After intermission the band opens with Karl Jenkins exciting “Palladio” before completely changing moods with Sir Arthur Sullivan’s beautiful “The Lost Chord.” Ryan Sharp will be featured on Eb Soprano cornet in a rousing rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” before the band brings the concert to a close with their second major work for brass of the evening. This work is a pinnacle of brass writing and will be the FCBB’s own choice test piece for the North American Championships. Due to confidentiality rules of the North American Brass Band Association the name and details of the piece cannot be released until after the competition.
